May 24-28, 2010:

This mini-fellowship -- Palliative Care Curriculum Development --offers attendees an opportunity to meet with expert faculty in a learning atmosphere that will promote their professional growth as clinician educators.

In addition to participating in small group didactic sessions on curriculum development, attendees spend time with faculty from the division of Geriatric Medicine and Duke's Center for Palliative Care discussing issues specific to teaching in palliative care. A highlight of the week is a workshop series on communication skills and how to teach them, led by Dr. James Tulsky.

Attendees also receive individual mentoring on developing a teaching plan for their home institutions.  Follow-up mentoring and support is provided for scholars during the year after the mini-fellowship program to assist in implementation of their teaching plans.

Featured topics and themes include:

  • Teaching in acute care, long-term care and hospice settings
  • Teaching communication skills
  • Developing learner appropriate objectives (e.g., medical student, resident, fellow) and educational formats (didactic, role-play, self-paced, bed-side)
  • Over-coming barriers to palliative care education in an already full curriculum
  • Incorporating technology and using innovative educational techniques
To receive an application, email the program office at <geri.education@mc.duke.edu> or call 919-660-7577.
