February 22-26, 2010: This mini-fellowship -- Long-term Care Education -- is designed to
improve the way long-term care education is presented to medical
students, residents and fellows.
Participant scholars take part in seminars on curriculum
development, assessment, evaluation, and scholarship, and observe
several sessions of Duke's Advanced Course in Long-term Care. This
13-session course was developed to enhance trainee knowledge and
understanding in leadership and administration issues in the long-term
care setting.
Scholars receive one-on-one
mentoring with Duke Geriatrics Education faculty, and continued
follow-up mentoring and support during the year after the
mini-fellowship.

Mini-fellowship featured topics and themes include
- Curriculum development, assessment, evaluation and scholarship
- Teaching in the nursing home, sub-acute care environment, homecare and hospice
- Developing learner appropriate objectives (e.g., medical
student, resident, fellow) and educational formats (didactic,
self-paced, bed-side)
- Overcoming barriers to long-term care education in an
already full curriculum by taking advantage of hot topics such as Care
Transitions
- Linking objectives to appropriate ACGME core competency categories of system-based practice, professionalism, and clinical care
- Incorporating technology and using innovative educational techniques
The next Long-Term Care Education Mini-fellowship will be held in February, 2010. To receive an application, email the program office at geri.education@mc.duke.edu or call 919-660-7577.
